Plastic surgery dates back to the 1800s (really!), but you can't deny that it's currently having a moment. Kylie Jenner's lips have been the cause of hundreds of articles, shows like E!'s Botched turn failed surgeries into a voyeuristic spectacle, and celebrities are constantly asked if they've gotten work done. Despite the prevalence of these procedures, breast augmentation, Botox, lip injections, and other treatments face constant criticism, with only a few stars (most notably the hilariously candid late Joan Rivers) being real about their body modification.
It's no wonder that those who elect to undergo cosmetic change feel the need to hide it. For example, we can only speculate about Renée Zellweger, who cited "a more fulfilling life" as the cause of her rumor-inducing, wildly different appearance on the red carpet last year. But now, one Instagram account is making waves simply by being open and honest about plastic surgery — in fact, the Plastic Positive account celebrates all things artificial.
The account is described as "all beyond natural beauty, the purest plastic perfection and unreal sex appeal," and it features images from assorted Instagram photos that have been tagged by their respective owners with the hashtag #plasticpositive. Common photos tagged with #plasticpositive include "frozen" foreheads, enormous breast and butt implants, and supersize lips. These Plastic Positives want to look fake and revel in it. Just think about the Kim Kardashians of the world. One Plastic Positive you might recognize is Rodrigo Alves, the "human Ken Doll," who has spent over $250,000 on his quest for perfection. It's hard to totally hate on Alves, who seems genuinely happy and excited about his surgeries and the results. We have to wonder, though: are happiness and self-satisfaction worth a bit of a price?
The Instagram account is linked to the official website Plastic Positive, and while it appears to be in its fledgling stages, it comprises mostly forums. In addition to photo sharing, users can advise each other on and discuss different procedures, implant sizes, and more. Whether or not you support getting work done, you have to admit it's refreshing to see people be more open about it and support each other.
